Jenny Patience is an observational astronomer who uses state-of-the-art techniques with large telescopes to discover and to characterize planets around nearby stars -- exoplanets. With advanced imaging, it is possible to observe faint exoplanet companions next to bright stars, providing measurements of orbits and enabling spectroscopy of atmospheres. Exploring the atmosphere properties such as composition and time variability of young giant planets and brown dwarfs, objects that are intermediate between stars and planets, are key areas of research for Patience and her team of students. Another research area is the investigation of the formation of planetary systems.
